Dribbble for Writers ✍️

No writer’s block

Available Domain: writtter.com

💡 TLDR: A platform for writers to share their portfolios and find and secure writing jobs

1. Problem/Opportunity

The Problem/Opportunity: In the age of AI finding great writing talent is harder than ever. Why? Because everyone is using ChatGPT to write, even academics. Check out how often the word “delve” is being used in academic papers (a word which ChatGPT famously overuses)…

So demand for great, unique, human writing is at an all-time high, but finding great writing talent is incredibly difficult. Which is why we’re bringing Dribbble (a design portfolio platform doing $45m revenue per year) to the world of writing.

Market Size: We estimate the TAM for this product to be in the low billions

2. Solution

The Idea: A platform for writers to share their portfolios and find and secure writing jobs

How it Works:

  • Writers sign up to the platform and create their profiles

  • They can then share excerpts from their writing on the platform, which is verified for both plagiarism and AI usage

  • Companies can then search for writers who they can hire or post jobs on a jobs board on the site

Go-to-market: Start in a single vertical, like YouTube scriptwriters, focus on that niche and broaden out from there

Business Model: Ads, pro membership and recruitment fees

Startup Costs: You’ll need a few thousand dollars to get this going

3. How You’ll Get Rich 💰

Exit Strategy: If you do this right you could exit to a large freelancing platform, like Upwork

Exit Multiple: Currently Upwork and Fiverr are valued around 2x forward revenue, but with higher growth you should be able to fetch a higher exit multiple than this

DRUNK BUSINESS IDEA

Clearly a $1bn idea.

JUST THE TIP

Trend 📈: B2B Influencers

We’re all familiar with influencers in the B2C world. Mr Beast, the Kardashians and so on. But influencers on the B2B side are not as prevalent as on the B2C side, even though the space is growing rapidly.

Business Ideas

  • B2B Influencer Ghostwriting Agency: an agency which ghostwrites content for B2B influencers

  • Niche B2B Influencer Network: Create networks focused on specific industries or niches (e.g., tech, healthcare, finance)

  • B2B Influencer Incubators: Establish incubator programs for emerging B2B influencers, providing guidance and mentorship to help them grow their audience

THE MONEYSHOT

Turning a £500 Overdraft into +£350m

Oliver Cookson’s story, like so many others, begins with him dropping out of school at age 16 back in 2004.

Cookson was a keen gym-goer and went to Maxi Nutrition to buy his supplements. At the time, they didn't sell online, they were just in retail. This was Oliver's 'aha' moment.

He decided to start selling supplements online.

He decided to start MyProtein.

But he had an immediate problem. Capital. No bank was willing to lend him money to start the business, so he got a personal overdraft for £500, used it to buy a few sacks of protein and built a basic website to sell the product through.

As the business began to grow Oliver and his team focussed maniacally on their unit economics. They pushed subscriptions and repeat purchases to maximize customer LTV (Lifetime value). They also vertically integrated which also allowed them to increase margins and formulate and release products extremely quickly. Their unit economics were so strong that the company managed to grow and remained profitable without raising any outside capital.

Then, in 2011, the company was acquired by The Hut Group for £58m. Oliver joined the board of The Hut Group and received shares in the company too, which paid dividends in 2020 when the Hut Group went public.

Oliver pocketed £283million during the float from selling his shares.

Not a bad outcome from an investment of £500.

Today Oliver runs Verve, another supplement business which sells greens powder, similar to AG1.

Will this venture be as successful as MyProtein?

Only time will tell.
