BUSINESS IDEA | VENTURE STARTUP
Amazon for Microplastic-free Products ☠️
Microplastics = macro opportunity
Available Domain: Micropfree.com
💡 TLDR: An eCommerce platform for browsing and purchasing microplastic-free products
1. Problem/Opportunity❓
The Problem/Opportunity: In yesterday’s edition of Half Baked we discussed the landmark study showing how dangerous microplastics are for human health and how widespread they are in our water supply, clothing, even our food.
Given the recent shift in public perception around microplastics consumers will undoubtedly start to look for microplastic-free products. So let’s create a platform for exactly this.
Market Size: This is a pretty nascent market, but a good proxy for it would be the sustainable goods market, which was valued at $294 billion in 2023. TAM won’t be an issue here.
2. Solution ✅
The Idea: An eCommerce platform for browsing and purchasing microplastic-free products.
How it Works:
Users go to the platform and can browse microplastic free products to buy
Once they purchase the items orders are fulfilled by the platform (delivered in microplastic-free packaging) or by the company itself if they prefer. This is similar to orders on Amazon which are fulfilled by merchants (FBM) or fulfilled by Amazon (FBA)
The platform also gives microplastic ratings for existing popular consumer products, then suggests alternatives. This would be your entire content strategy
The brand could also provide microplastic certifications to businesses who are refactoring their products to be microplastic-free
Go-to-market: partner with brands who offer microplastic-free products, list them on a website and dropship their products to customers. Then build from there.
Monetisation: Charge a transaction fee on products bought through the platform.
Startup Costs: Assuming you start by partnering with brands for a dropshipping model in the beginning startup costs would be next to nothing.
3. How You’ll Get Rich 💰
Hold: This could be a huge business in its own right which you may want to build forever
Exit Strategy: If you want to go the exit route you could sell to a large eComm marketplace like eBay or Etsy. Who knows, maybe even Jeff Bezos himself could get his checkbook out
Exit Multiple: Most marketplace businesses’ EV/Gross Profit multiples range between 10x to 20x.

JUST THE TIP
Trend 📈: Prescriptions for ADHD are skyrocketing
We all know our attention spans are getting progressively worse. But the data on this is truly terrifying.
Data from Public Health Scotland shows the number of adults receiving an NHS prescription for ADHD has increased seven-fold over the last 10 years.
While this data is for Scotland only we know that globally the trend is much the same.

THE MONEYSHOT
Making +$100m from One Idea (Twice)
Back in 2017 Nikita Bier decided to create the next viral app.
So he built tbh, an app which allowed teenagers to anonymously complement each other. In order to know who complimented them they would have to pay.
In August 2017 he launched the app in a high school in Georgia and after 4 days 40% of the school had downloaded the app. By October the app hit 5m downloads and 2.5m daily active users with a $0 marketing budget. That same month Facebook acquired tbh for an estimated $30,000,000.
Now for most founders this would be enough to retire, sit on a beach and never work again. But not for Nikita.
In the summer of 2022 he called his shot - that he would make $10m over the course of a single summer.
How? By doing the exact same thing again.
In August he launched Gas, a carbon copy of tbh. Just 2 months later they had 1m active users and $1m in sales and by month 3 they hit 10m users.
In January 2023, 5 months after launching, Discord acquired the app for a reported $100m.
Will Nikita come back for part 3? If he does it will be The Return of the King.
