The Problem/Opportunity: We live in testing times. And in these testing times there’s one thing we can all turn to for comfort. Not our loved ones. Or therapy. Something much more effective. Online shopping.

But despite the benefits online shopping is still a pretty slow, cumbersome experience. You spend hours going to individual sites to find a single product you want. But what if you could search thousands of e-commerce stores and millions of products through one single platform, like a decentralized Amazon? That would be cool wouldn’t it? We think so. So let’s make it.

Market Size: In 2023, global retail e-commerce sales reached an estimated $5.8 trillion dollars. That’s a hell of a lot of online shopping.

2. Solution ✅

The Idea: A search engine for e-commerce products

How it Works:

• Similar to Google the platform scrapes product listings and store data from thousands of e-commerce stores around the world on Shopify, Woocommerce, Bigcommerce etc.

• A customer goes to the website and searches for products. They can buy from multiple different stores in the same cart transactions and receive tracking links to the different products once they’ve purchased them

• Payments are automatically and instantly routed to the store’s e-commerce store through the site’s backend, driving incremental sales to those stores with no work on their part

• There’s also an AI-powered shopping assistant built-in which can help with queries, give recommendations and so on

Go-to-market: Once you’ve built the product it’s all about going viral. Spam it in forums, on Reddit, anywhere you can to drive traffic

Business Model: Sell ads where products appear higher in search results based on keywords used. Take no commission on sales

Startup Costs: You could build this incredibly cheaply, once you have the technical chops

Exit Strategy: The goal here is to get acquired by one of the big players in the e-commerce software space, like Shopify or Woocommerce

Building a $1m App in 5 Hours

What could you achieve in 5 hours? Run a marathon (slowly)? Read a short book? Binge a Netflix show?

Well this founder managed to build a $1m revenue app in just 5 hours that completely transformed his life.

This is his story.

Dawson Botsford first encountered programming when he was in junior high school…and fell in love. He loved building software and one of his earliest projects was building a program to help him and his classmates to cheat on a geometry test.

It was a hit, and Dawson had his first taste of entrepreneurial success.

So unsurprisingly Dawson pursued a career as a software engineer and like so many gifted early programmers found himself working in a few different big tech companies.

But there was a problem. He hated it. He was working in large, bloated organizations with ineffective teams and he wanted out.

So that’s exactly what he did.

He left America and traveled the world for a year, doing Yoga, hiking and lots of other instagram friendly activities. And while he was travelling he did more and more research into the world of crypto.

So when he returned to the United States he decided to build a product in the crypto space, launching Earnifi in February 2021.

In simple terms Earnifi is a tool to help crypto users to find unclaimed airdrops, where projects throw free tokens at people. And it does this in a genius way. It shows users the dollar amount of their unclaimed airdrops for free and make them pay to see the specific details of the airdrop.

When Dawson launched the product on Twitter it went super viral and his site had 10,000 sign ups in 48 hours.

Over the next 18 months Earnifi went from strength-to-strength, growing to 250,000 users, $1m ARR and helping users claim over $150 million in airdrops. Sheesh.

Dawson was a rockstar in the crypto space and his meteoric rise to the top meant big companies came knocking. They wanted to buy his product.

So in November 2022 Bankless acquired Earnifi for an undisclosed sum, but we would estimate it in the $5m - $8m range. Dawson became their CTO, a position he left earlier this year, no surprise given his disdain for working in big tech companies.

Today Dawson lives out of a van, travelling wherever he wants and surfing as much as he can.

He’s living the dream. All of which stemmed from 5 hours of hard work.

Sometimes it only take a few hours to change your life. So use your time wisely.
